Baltimore Ravens running back Bernard Pierce has been released from the team after being arrested on charges of driving under the influence early on Wednesday morning.
Pierce reportedly failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over around 02:00 (local time) for going 55mph in a 30mph zone.
"We are aware of the situation and learning more about it," a team spokesman said. "We take these matters seriously."
The team later confirmed via their Twitter account that Pierce had been cut from their roster.
If convicted, Pierce would face a suspension under the NFL's new drug policy.
Projected to be the starter after Ray Rice was suspended, Pierce failed to live up to expectations, rushing for 366 yards and two touchdowns last season.
